This is an older song that I've been holding on to for a couple months for no really good reason. I wanted to re-record parts, but decided to release it as-is so it's out there. :)
My parents would use the phrase "it's protection, not rejection" a lot when something didn't go according to how we saw it going. I've been thinking about it a lot and have always wanted to put it in a song. It didn't even start out with that phrase, but it ended up working out, like things often do.
God, you uniquely equip us to reach various people. Our life lessons and struggles give us unique perspectives, and paint a bigger picture that shows others your faithfulness.

Protection Not Rejection (DEMO) by Stephan Ainley
[VERSE 1]
I missed the light, was late to work another time
Was not the way I planned to start the day
At times I feel the world will get the best of me
I wish that we could find another way
Stay tuned, stay tuned
[VERSE 2]
But little did I know that just on down the road
Another driver ran through their stop sign
And had I got the green he would have hit me hard
Another thankless day you saved my life
No thank you, without a thank you
[CHORUS 1]
I'm trying to live in your protection
While figuring out what that all means
When my plans fail, I know it's not rejection
You're just working behind the scenes
[VERSE 3]
I seem to have a million questions all the time
Just trying all my best to understand
Like why she'd leave or why he had to die so young?
Too much of life seems hard and so unplanned
Renew my mind, renew
[CHORUS 1]
I'm trying to live in your protection
While figuring out what that all means
When my plans fail, I know it's not rejection
You're just working behind the scenes
[CHORUS 2]
Cause I only see this one brief moment
While you're directing everything
I'm learning to let go and to follow while you're
Working behind the scenes
[BRIDGE 1]
I have to trust, I need to know
That you'll be out there paving pathways when I go
That I'm a part of your perfect plan
And you have seen me in this spot since time began
[BRIDGE 2]
I'll plan each step, one at a time
But ultimately you're the one who paints my line
You're working out all things for good
And everything turns out exactly as it should
